Neurodiversity Affirming
Mental Health Counseling
What does Neurodiversity Affirming actually mean?
Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy is client-centered and activities are led by the client.
Neurodivergent Affirming therapy is trauma-informed and any therapy goals are not to “normalize” the client but to provide safety and positive well-being as they have indicated for themselves.
Neurodivergent Affirming Therapists do not engage in ABA or ABA-adjacent therapies.
Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy practices seek to understand Autistic behaviors, communication, and thinking styles, such as monotropism- versus trying to pathologize behaviors and change them to “normal”.
Neurodivergent-Affirming Providers do assist people in learning about their brains, how they communicate best and guide them toward well-being from an Autistic / ADHD world view.
Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapist don’t promote or use Social Skills Training programs because masking ones true nature causes trauma responses and increased risk for suicide, depression and anxiety disorders.
